Educational Goal

The Mathematics and Informatics Program provides education, through lectures/seminars, in mathematics and the kinds of information science and statistics that had their foundation in mathematics. Our goal is to help students pursue an in-depth learning in mathematics, information science and statistics so that they will develop into professionals such as engineers, researchers or educators who will have the ability to think creatively and flexibly.

2. Capabilities desired in students

An excellent ability in logical thinking and expression is required, in addition to the basic academic ability in calculus, linear algebra and statistics. However, when application for the Special Admissions in Other Fields is made, the student must additionally have the knowledge/ability worthy of a bachelor’s degree holder, knowledge/skills in their specialized field and foreign language ability (English).

3. Basic Principle of Candidate Screening

The General Selection (oral examination) tests applicants’ basic knowledge and basic operational capabilities in mathematics, aptitude, motivation and communication skills through an interview including an oral examination. Also to be taken into account is the grade achieved at the school the applicant has graduated from.

The mathematics of the General Selection (written examination) evaluates the basic knowledge and basic operational capabilities in calculus and linear algebra, and the ability of logical thinking and expression. The foreign language assesses applicants’ English proficiency, which is necessary to read the literature in mathematics and computer science. Applicants also undergo an interview including an oral examination which is designed to appraise applicants’ basic knowledge and basic operational capabilities in mathematics, aptitude, motivation and communication skills. Also to be taken into account is the grade achieved at the school the applicant has graduated from.

Recommendation Special Selection evaluates applicants’ knowledge/ability related to the specialized field of the Mathematics and Informatics and aptitude/motivation through an interview including an oral examination. These abilities are necessary to achieve the status of the sort of human resource outlined in the Educational Goals. Also to be taken into account is the grade achieved at the school the applicant has graduated from and the Statement of Reasons for Applying.

The Special Admissions in Other Fields appraises applicants’ ability, aptitude and motivation all of which are necessary to achieve the status of the sort of human resource outlined in the Educational Goals. The appraisal is conducted through an interview, including an oral examination. Also to be taken into account is the grade achieved at the school the applicant has graduated from.

The Special Selection for Those in Employment evaluates applicants’ basic knowledge and basic operational capabilities in mathematics, aptitude, motivation and communication skills through an oral examination. Applicants are evaluated also through the screening of the application documents. Also to be taken into account is the grade achieved at the school the applicant has graduated from.

The mathematics of the International Students Special Admissions evaluates the basic knowledge and basic operational capabilities in calculus and linear algebra, and the ability in logical thinking and expression. In principle, the foreign language examination is either in English or Japanese. Also to be taken into account is the grade achieved at the school the applicant has graduated from.
